Every once on awhile I recall this little mini movie that I saw on television as a child. It was on CBC and anyone over 60 might recall what I mean when I say it was just black and white and very cheap Canadian TV. Anyway, this story was about a man who was confined to a room for five years.

He could not leave the room, but could ask for anything and he would be given it. (I was very young when I watched this and really believed it all) Anyway, he went through different phases such as sleeping all the time, staying up day and night, drinking and staying drunk. One day he decided to ask for and was brought a grand piano. He did not know anything about it, but asked for books and started to learn by teaching himself. After a few years he was really playing beautifully. At the end of the five year term you saw the door to the room open, but, he was so engrossed in his music that he didn’t bother to go out. He had no way of knowing night from day so he was spending every waking moment on his studying.

Pieces of rags were the curling fashion of by gone days. You never heard of heat damage, or over processing from these. Even bobby pins were a great way to curl your hair.

Make pieces of cloth from old materials such as table cloths or napkins and cut into strips at least one inch wide and wider if you want big curls and anywhere from five to ten inches long.

Wash hair as usual and allow to partially dry until just damp. If you have hard to curl hair, you might use a bit of setting gel at this point. Part hair off into sections and take a rag and use it like a roller. Put the strand of hair in the middle of the rag and my method is to fold the rag over from the right side of the strand and then fold the left side over something like we did the home permanent papers. This will help to hold the hair while you roll. Then continue to roll under until you reach the scalp. Tie the ends. Probably one tie will do because if you tie a tight knot you will have to cut the material and won’t be able to reuse the rag. It will take practice to get it so that the ends don’t come out.

Now, the good part is that you can sleep on this without any problem at all. You will not experience heat damage or over processing and you will be saving on electricity used by your hair dryer
